Spoilers for Endless Ocean Luminous ahead!

The term UML stands for "unidentified marine life", and refers to creatures in Endless Ocean Luminous stated to only be found in the Veiled Sea, which briefly appear during dives once enough creatures displaying strange biometrics have been scanned. These creatures typically distinguish themselves from other members of similar species with their size, color, or some other extraordinary factor. Focusing on a UML for the first time will award the player with an achievement.

UMLs are treated as newly discovered creatures, and therefore do not have scientific names. Instead, they are referred to using a common name, along with the UML acronym followed by a number.

Each UML has a rare color variant, which can be encountered at random in the same manner as standard UMLs.

Endless Ocean Luminous[]

Mechanics[]

A UML will only appear after a mission from HQ has been completed, requiring creatures with strange biometrics to be scanned. The number of creatures required starts at seven for the first biometric mission per stage, then nine for the second mission, and eleven for the third. Sections of the map that have been filled in will display an orange circle indicating the radius in which a required creature can be found, as long as a mission is currently active.

Once this mission has been completed, Sera will alert the player to the presence of a UML, and play a cutscene showcasing the creature. Once the cutscene has ended, checking the map will indicate where the UML can be found in a similar way to creatures with strange biometrics. Each UML will unlock a square on the Mystery Board when scanned for the first time.

UMLs are coated in a similar bioluminescent algae to other creatures, with a rainbow effect. Collecting the light from a UML will trigger blue orbs of light to spawn across the stage, which can be collected for extra P. These light orbs spawn along creature paths, and will only appear for the duration that the UML is present. After a few minutes, the UML will disappear, indicated to the player by Sera, after which point more creatures with strange biometrics will appear, and a new mission to find them all can be started.
