Trivia[]
Albinism is caused by a genetic lack of melanin, which is needed for pigmentation. In most cases this leads to eye problems such as poor vision or over-sensitivity to light, and sometimes other physical weaknesses. A lack of natural camouflage can also leave albinos more vulnerable to predators. As albinos are so rare, they have long been considered either as sacred or as evil omens.

Albinos are born with a defect caused by a genetic lack of melanin, which is needed for pigmentation. In most cases this leads to poor vision, and they are physically weaker than normal individuals. Because of this, as well as their lack of natural camouflage, albinos are unlikely to survive for long in the wild. As albinos are so rare, they have long been considered either as sacred or as bad omens. But from their perspective, they have no means to decide for themselves... ?
Location[]
Endless Ocean 2[]
Snowball lives in the Weddell Sea, on-shore at coordinates A-4. However, she only appears during snowstorms (regardless of the time of day). When there is not a snowstorm, Big Bobby will be found in Snowball's place.
How to Find It
|
---|
In order to unlock Snowball, the player must have taken at least 10 photo requests that got an A or B rating. This will unlock the last sub-quest in the "Fragments of Memory" quest, in which the player must take a photo of a blue whale for the mysterious ML; once they've done so, the special request "Research Subject" will be active in the notebook. Upon speaking to Hayako Sakurai while this quest is active, she says:
"Hmm… You have excellent knowledge of marine life. I wonder if I could ask something of you." She and the player move to the small table with the umbrella, to discuss the matter further. "I'm currently researching a pure white rockhopper penguin that has been spotted in the Antarctic. I've named her Snowball. She's an albino! I really want a photo to include in my current research report. I'm busy with work at the moment, so I don't have time to take any… She's very difficult to track down, though. The only time you can really find her is when there's a snowstorm. You should be able to find her in a place where she can easily come ashore during a snowstorm. I have a reward if you can get the photo for me. Can you please submit the photo to Jean-Eric when you've taken it?" When the player successfully locates and focuses on Snowball for the first time, they earn the title "Penguin Maniac". After the player has taken a picture of Snowball and given it to Jean-Eric to give to Dr. Sakurai, she'll thank the player when they next speak to her: "I got the photo from Jean-Eric. You got a great photo of Snowball. Thank you! Did she look well? Ultraviolet light can damage an albino's skin. That's why they usually come out when there's no sun, like in a snowstorm. Isn't she fascinating? Please go and visit her every now and then! Take this. It's your reward." Dr. Sakurai then gives the player 5,000P, as well as the Navy Fins, a pair of fins that the player can wear while diving. |
Dialogue[]
Endless Ocean 2[]
Favorite Creature[]
Jean-Eric: "This is the penguin that Hayako is studying. It's an albino rockhopper penguin. I think she mentioned that this one was called Snowball. According to Hayako, albinism is caused by a melanin deficiency. Melanin is the pigment that colors skin, eyes, and hair. Albinos are usually conspicuous and therefore more prone to attack, but it's blending in with the snowstorm nicely. A clever move, making use of its own uniqueness like that!"
Behavior[]
She simply walks about slowly among the other, normally-colored rockhopper penguins that stay there, although the combination of her coloration and surroundings can make her hard to spot at times. The player can obtain her in-game trivia by taking a picture of her - luckily, as taking a photo of her is also the goal of a special request from Hayako, the player will unlock it during the course of the relevant mission.

Notes[]
- This is one of Jean-Eric's favorite creatures.
- Snowball's Japanese name, "コユキ" (Koyuki), can be translated literally to mean "little snow".
- Two additional transcriptions of Snowball's Japanese name are present in its encyclopedia entry, though they are all pronounced the same.
- The first of them, "小雪", can be used both to refer generally to light snowfall, and more specifically to Xiaoxue, the solar term in the Chinese calendar which indicates the beginning of winter.
- The second transcription is "こゆき". While it is a common name, when translated literally it also refers to light snowfall.
- Two additional transcriptions of Snowball's Japanese name are present in its encyclopedia entry, though they are all pronounced the same.
- Though Snowball did not return in Endless Ocean Luminous, the game does feature a tag of an albino rockhopper penguin, which could be a reference to her.
Real-Life Information[]
- True to Snowball's in-game description, albinism can result in some traits detrimental to survival in the wild, primarily the effect to eyesight. Albino animals tend to have poorer vision, which can make finding food or spotting predators difficult[1].
- Many also stand out to predators, but there is an advantage to standing out in that it helps animals that live near human roadways avoid getting hit by cars - the drivers can see albino animals better than their darker counterparts[2].
- There are different types of albinism - complete, partial, and ocular. Partial albinism, as might be gathered from its name, only affects parts of the animal or person in question; ocular albinism only affects the eyes, and is extremely rare (and generally only studied in humans)[3].
- Partial albinism shouldn't be confused with vitiligo, a condition in which parts of the body lighten as a creature ages - albinism is present since birth, whereas vitiligo develops over time[4].
- Another word for albinism affecting any part of the body, not just the eyes, is oculocutaneous (pronounced ock-you-low-kew-TAIN-ee-us) albinism[5]. This comes from the roots "oculo-", which means related to the eyes, and "cutaneous", which means related to the skin; hence, oculocutaneous albinism can affect both the eyes and skin.
- Snowball appears to have complete albinism, as all parts of her body are white and her eyes look red. However, it is likely the case that her eyes are not actually red - the lack of pigmentation in her irises simply allows the blood vessels at the back to be seen, causing the red appearance[5][6].
- Ordinary rockhopper penguins also have red eyes, so Snowball would have had eyes that looked red regardless of whether or not they actually had pigmentation at all.
- As is accurately reported in Snowball's in-game description, albinism is seen by many cultures as either a blessing or a curse.
- Perhaps one of the most well-known examples of this is that many Native American cultures hold that seeing a white buffalo is a sign of great fortune and power, and that killing one brings down horrible luck upon the perpetrator[1].
- A more deadly belief is held in Tanzania, where believers and practitioners of traditional rituals say that potions made from the bones of albino people can bring wealth[7].
