The Scarlet Trimmed Pleco (Pseudacanthicus sp. in-game, really Pseudacanthicus pirarara) is a species of freshwater plecostomus found only in Endless Ocean 2.
It gets its name from its red-edged fins, which contrast with its charcoal-grey body. It is quite large for a plecostomus, and is mostly a scavenger.

Notes[]
- This is one of Oceana's favorite creatures.
- The scarlet-trimmed pleco is one of only three pleco species to appear in the Endless Ocean games. The other two are the zebra pleco and the royal panaque.
Real-Life Information[]
- True to the in-game description, the scarlet-trimmed pleco is equipped with some impressive spines[1][2]. The genus name Pseudacanthicus reflects this, as it means "false thorn" in Greek[3]. Members of this genus are often referred to as "cactus plecos" because they all have similar spines[4].
- In the aquarium industry, unnamed plecostomus fishes like this one are described with a system that gives them a label consisting of the letter "L" followed by a number[5]; This specific species used to be L025[6][7]. In 2016, seven years after Blue World's release, it was named Pseudacanthicus pirarara[8][9].
- The specific name pirarara comes from the Brazilian common name for the redtail catfish[8][10].
- Though sought after by aquarists for its striking appearance, scarlet-trimmed pleco is large and rather territorial, so it can be somewhat difficult to keep in a tank with other fish[11][12]. Even finding one for sale in the first place is tough, and the prices are usually very high[13].
- Other common names for the scarlet-trimmed pleco include Red Devil Pleco, Scarlet Cactus Pleco, and Scarlet Pleco[1][14].
