The Private Reef is a sub-stage in Endless Ocean 2, accessible through Gatama Atoll. This stage is unlocked after obtaining at least two reef decorations, which can either be purchased from Nancy or gifted to the player for completing certain quests.
Once unlocked, Jean-Eric will approach the player asking for their assistance in curating the reef, gifting them two decorations: the staghorn coral and cat's paw coral.
In-Game[]
Notebook Description[]
"This small area is where Jean-Eric oversees a number of activities on behalf of the Pelago authorities.
Here he builds coral reefs, carries out geological research, and conducts experiments on rearing marine species."
Flora, Fauna, and Geography[]
Local Life[]
Different creatures can be attracted to the reef depending on the decorations placed within it. Most of the species that can be attracted here are native to Gatama Atoll, such as flame angelfish, purple queens, green sea turtles, and humphead wrasse. However, species from other areas can show up as well, such as the pelagic thresher shark, which is normally only found in Ciceros Strait; and the powder blue tang normally only found in the Zahhab Region.
Location and Geography[]
The entrance to this sub-stage is the Private Reef Entrance, a dive point in eastern Gatama Atoll.
The main feature of the Private Reef is its customization, allowing for different combination of corals, seagrass, kelp, and other decorations to be placed to the player's will. Similarly to the Aquarium, pressing will open a menu allowing for decorations to be added or removed from the reef. Coral can be placed on the large rocky surface in the center of the reef, while plants and inorganic decorations can be placed in the surrounding sand, with few exceptions.

Notes[]
- One of the items that the Private Reef can be decorated with, the Stone Tablet, has an item description that directly mentions that it originates from Manoa Lai, which is a nod to the Stone Monuments from Endless Ocean's Underwater Ruins of Mo'ia Atoll. It also uses a near-identical texture and model to the first game's tablets.
- Neither the model or texture of the Stone Tablet is identical to the first game's; both were slightly changed between games to better suit their addition to the Private Reef. For instance, the model and texture of the tablets don't have a back in the first game, likely because the tablets can never naturally be seen from behind in the Ruins as they are all placed against or near walls, and so their backs were never added. However, when they were added to the second game as a Private Reef item which can be seen from behind, some updates to the model were required, such as adding a visible back to its model, constructing a back texture using an edited version of the tablet's front texture, and removing shadows from the texture, as the tablets would be in a far more open and well-lit environment than they were in the Ruins.
- The decoration called "Ruined Pillar" resembles some of the structures found in Ciceros Strait's Triton Village Ruins.
- The Private Reef is the only area in the game where the default background music does not play. Instead, it uses a leitmotif that is shared among a select few landmarks in the game, such as the Coral Valley and the Celestial Mausoleum.
