Not to be confused with the pufferfish.

The Porcupinefish (Diodon hystrix) is a species of fish found only in Endless Ocean 2.

The feature that it is both named for and known best for is the set of long, sharp spines that cover its entire body. These spines usually lay flat, and the porcupinefish swallows water to make them stand up if it feels the need to use them.

In-Game[]

Marine Encyclopedia[]

Endless Ocean 2[]

Description[]

"Its rounded body and large eyes make this fish rather cute. When threatened, it inflates its body by inhaling water and erects sharp spines at its sides. But even then it still looks kind of cute."

Location[]

Endless Ocean 2[]

They are found in Gatama Atoll, around coordinates B-2, G-6, and F-7. They can also be drawn into the Private Reef if the Favia coral has been placed.

Behavior[]

They appear solitarily or in small groups. They respond well to food and puff out their spines when touched. Despite this, they pose no threat to the player.

Notes[]

  • This is one of Oceana's favorite creatures.

Real-Life Information[]

  • True to this fish's in-game behavior and description, the porcupinefish is known for its main defense mechanism - filling its body with water and making the spines all over its body point out straight[1]. Porcupinefish share this trait with pufferfish, which makes sense considering that they are related (sharing the order Tetraodontiformes)[2]. If inflated, a porcupinefish can expand up to three times its original size[3].
    • An extra weapon this fish sports is its toxic organs, which can kill predators (including humans) easily[4]. The poison it carries is called tetrodotoxin, and is a potent neurotoxin that damages the nervous system[5]. Tetrodotoxin is perhaps most famous for being a potentially-deadly aspect of eating the meat of any species of pufferfish - a delicacy in Japan known as fugu[6].
    • Porcupinefish can also put out toxins from their skin if they feel threatened or scared[1]. This can make them dangerous to keep as an aquarium fish - the poison might kill their tankmates[7].
  • Though they are found day and night in-game, the real-life porcupinefish is nocturnal[8][9].
  • Other common names for the porcupinefish include spotted porcupine fish, spot-fin porcupine fish, giant porcupinefish, and hedgehog fish[1][10].
