In the Paoul language, 'gatama gatawa' means 'mother's diamond necklace'. Long, long ago there was an island where the most beautiful woman was envied by her daughter, who was the second most beautiful. This crocodile is said to have a belly full of diamonds it has swallowed, and so this ugly creature has a beautiful name.

 [Legende vom Perlenhalsband]
 【Legend of the pearl necklace】
Gatama gatawa means ''pearl necklace'' in the Pelago language. According to legend, long, long ago there was an island on which the most beautiful woman was envied by the second most beautiful. The second most beautiful woman murdered her and took her pearl necklace... as punishment from the gods, she was turned into an ugly crocodile. It is also said that this crocodile has a belly full of pearls that it swallowed. Whatever the case, its beautiful name does not match its ferocious appearance.

Location[]

Endless Ocean 2[]

The Pelago Crocodile can be seen on land in southeastern Gatama Atoll at coordinates G-8, but only after a certain quest has been completed, and only during the daytime. At night, it is replaced by a leatherback turtle.

How to Find It
In order to find the Pelago crocodile, the player must first purchase a telescope from Nancy, then look into it on the morning after a full moon. Upon doing so, they'll make note of a large, unfamiliar object floating on the water in southeastern Gatama Atoll.

When the player backs away from the telescope, Jean-Eric will approach them and say:

"What is the matter? You look like there's something on your mind. Is there something you want to ask?"

The player will explain what they saw, and Jean-Eric will cross his arms and say:

"A large, odd-looking object floating in the water? That's not really enough of a description for me to tell you what it is. You said you saw it in the southeast of Gatama Atoll? Well then, let's go and have a look. We might find some clues."

When the player goes to investigate and arrives in the southeast, Jean-Eric will come over the radio to comment:

"So it looks like you're in the southeast. Can you see anything suspicious?"

The player notes:

There were reports of tracks that looked like something big being dragged.

Jean-Eric replies:

"Tracks of something big being dragged... Can it be... No, it can't be. They're...

Anyway, go ashore now. You might find some clues. Keep a sharp eye out to make sure you don't miss anything."

Going ashore will introduce the player to the crocodile. They will then earn the title "Dragon Tracker".

Dialogue[]

Endless Ocean 2[]

Favorite Creature[]

Jean-Eric: "Can you hear me? This is Jean-Eric. My goodness! This is a legendary creature! It's the Pelago crocodile! As you can see, it's a marine crocodile. There are ancient records of it living in the Pelago commonwealth long ago. But it's now believed to be extinct. Nice find!"

Behavior[]

This creature stays stationary on land, occasionally flicking its tail. It seems to prefer being fed over any other form of interaction, evidenced by the fact that it's the only way to unlock its trivia. The crocodile will hiss at the player if they pet it, but despite this, it does not pose a threat to them.

Notes[]

  • The Pelago Crocodile is the only legendary creature in Endless Ocean 2 to have a recorded length.
  • The Pelago Crocodile is one of the only legendary creatures that is not simply an altered version of a regular creature seen in-game, but rather its own unique species.
  • There are multiple quirks with how the Pelago Crocodile functions that have been found within Endless Ocean 2's data, that are impossible to see during unaltered gameplay. For instance, it has data tied to being a dangerous creature - such as attacking animations and aggression data[1] - that are never used in the final game. It also has working data allowing it to be placed into the Aquarium, swimming in the main tank rather than being on land in the Marine Life Annex[2].
    • This suggests that the Pelago Crocodile may have initially been created as a dangerous underwater creature, and was repurposed into a land-dwelling passive creature at some point in the game's development.
    • Additionally, this could imply that during development, it was not always a legendary creature, as no legendaries (except for the Ancient Mother and Magu Tapa, which could be placed in the Aquarium in Endless Ocean) have unused aquarium data. Compounding this is the fact that no other legendary creature's encyclopedia entry begins with its size, as the Pelago Crocodile's (and all non-legendary creatures') does.
      • Though the intended species is ultimately unknown, due to their similarities in habitat and morphology, if the Pelago Crocodile was not a legendary creature, it could have simply been a saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus).
  • The spectacled caiman's animations are all named internally after the Pelago Crocodile: they are all prefixed with "d302", which is the Pelago Crocodile's creature ID[2]. Additionally, when viewing the spectacled caiman's texture, pieces of the Pelago Crocodile's texture can be seen underneath; used as a base layer for the spectacled caiman's.
    • This implies the spectacled caiman was created using the Pelago Crocodile as a base, both for animations and textures.
  • The legend told in the Pelago Crocodile's encyclopedia trivia has multiple differences, depending on the localization being played.
    • In Japanese, the two women on the island are not related; they are only the most beautiful and second most beautiful women. Additionally, the second most beautiful is said to have murdered the most beautiful and stolen her necklace, as opposed to simply stealing it.
    • In both English localizations and in French, "gatama gatawa" is said to mean "diamond necklace", while in every other localization, including the original Japanese, it means "pearl necklace".
      • Likewise, the precious gem stated to be in the Pelago Crocodile's stomach also changes depending on the localization, to either diamonds or pearls.
