Character[]
Role in L&L Diving Service[]
Despite being unable to dive, Jean-Eric still manages to help the company in other ways. He is in charge of managing photo requests from clients, as well as manning the boat and operating the radio, which he uses to keep in touch with the other members of the company when they are underwater.
He was entrusted by the local government with the duty of curating the Private Reef, a responsibility he eventually shares with the player.
Plot Relevance[]
Jean-Eric is the first character the player is introduced to, teaching the player everything they need to know about life on Nineball Island. After the first tutorial dive, Jean-Eric wakes the player up early to search for his granddaughter, as she had run off to Deep Hole alone to search for a piece of the Dragon Flute which she had lost there many years ago. After rescuing her, Jean-Eric sternly reprimands Oceana for her recklessness, to which she apologizes.
Multiple times throughout the course of the story, Jean-Eric strongly resists looking further into the Song of Dragons and Pacifica Treasure, as he believes it lead to the death of his son, Matthias. This reaches a boiling point after nearly escaping a blizzard in the Weddell Sea, during which L&L could hear the Song of Dragons. Jean-Eric declares an end to following the Song of Dragons, believing that pursuing it leads to nothing but misfortune. After returning to Nineball Island, Jean-Eric is said to be behaving unusually, muttering under his breath about something. Hayako suggests that the player ask what is bothering him, as she believes nobody else could get an answer out of him. Upon doing so, Jean-Eric confides in the player his reasoning for believing the Song of Dragons to be cursed. He founded L&L Diving Service with his son, Matthias, who began fervently searching for the Pacifica Treasure. Jean-Eric believed it was merely legend and discouraged his son from looking further into it, which caused a rift in their relationship. Matthias died only a year later, and Jean-Eric believed is son died with nothing but contempt for his father in his heart, which still weighs greatly on him. He then leaves for a time, to think on his own.
After travelling to Cortica River with GG in search of the Pacifica Treasure, Jean-Eric explains that the final piece of the Dragon Flute is likely still within the HD-9, the submersible in which his son went into the Zahhab Region Depths to never return. After explaining the events leading up to his son's accident, he resolves to confront his past, retrieve the final piece of the Dragon Flute, and figure out the mystery of the Song of Dragons.
Personality[]
Unlike his granddaughter, Jean-Eric is often much more serious and strict. He is a realist who initially prefers to focus on company work than pursuing the Song of Dragons, but his interest in the myth increases over time throughout the story. He is, however, quite friendly and is always willing to help anyone in need. He is good at billiards and nine-ball, having won Nineball Island in the latter of the two. He also has a tendency to talk about his age, frequently commenting about how things have changed and comparing the age of other things to his own.
Relationships[]
Jean-Eric has a strong relationship with Oceana, most likely because, having lost his son, Oceana is the closest family he has. He strongly cares for her, but occasionally, much to her annoyance, Jean-Eric can be overprotective of his granddaughter. He also forms a close friendship with the player character, who becomes a sort of confidant for him as the story progresses.
He had worked together with his son for many years back in the day, but after a heated argument between them, Matthias struck out on his own to solve the Song of Dragons mystery, resulting in his demise. Matthias left a note to Jean-Eric in the submarine expressing his guilt and regret for how he had treated his father. After reading this note when the player character took it back up to him, Jean-Eric came to terms with the dark events of his past and was eased of a great burden that had been haunting him for years.
At one point, he states that he started to dislike whales after Matthias died, as the first time they heard the Song of Dragons was while they were researching sperm whales in the Zahhab Region Depths, creating an association with his son's death and whales. This seems to have dissipated over time, however, as there are several whales in the game that he considers one of his favorite creatures.
He holds a great deal of respect for dolphins, as they are some of his favorite creatures.
The founder of L&L Diving Service and once a world famous ocean explorer—Jean-Eric sets foot in the water no longer due to a bad case of the bends. He still leads expeditions from the boat, and has his hands full looking after his granddaughter Oceana.

Notes[]
Given his inability to dive, Jean-Eric is the only human character in the game to never be seen in a wetsuit. However, he is the only human character to wear more than one on-land outfit, as he sports a winter coat while in the polar regions.
