The Cinderella sea slug (Hypselodoris apolegma) is a species of nudibranch found in both Endless Ocean and Endless Ocean 2.

This creature is mostly a soft pink-purple color with a white lace-like trim, yellow gills, and antennae. It is notorious for being difficult to find in the first game.

In-Game[]

Marine Encyclopedia[]

Endless Ocean[]

Description[]

"These creatures have nearly cylindrical bodies with two antennae and a tassel-like set of protruding gills. Reddish-purple in color, they can be seen year-round in enclosed areas of coral reefs.

The edges of their bodies contain a white, mesh-like pattern that fades as it moves inward, while their gills and antennae are yellow.

Sea slugs are some of the most colorful and diverse creatures on earth. With over 3,000 different species to choose from, the work of researchers who study this fascinating creature has only just begun."

Endless Ocean 2[]

Description[]

"This gracefully drifting reddish violet sea slug has a white lacelike pattern at its edge. It has been filmed breeding with what was thought to be another species, but after seeing this, some researchers think they may be two color variations of the same species."

Location[]

Endless Ocean[]

These can be found very rarely under zoom-mode glows on the rocky coral walls surrounding the Underwater Ruins of Mo'ia Atoll, underneath the spots of sunlight on the floor of the Ruins (which can be seen most prominently in the Room of Oracles), as well as on the floor of the The Wreck of the Navier in Ship's Rest. They have a reputation for being difficult to find.

Endless Ocean 2[]

Groups can be found in zoom mode spots in the Cavern of the Gods at coordinates B-2/3 and D-3/4.

Behavior[]

Endless Ocean[]

Cinderella sea slugs are usually found in zoom mode spots; only one sea slug will appear per zoom mode spot. They like being petted and fed.

Endless Ocean 2[]

These are found in zoom mode spots, usually by themselves or in pairs, although they can also be seen with striped white sea slugs. They squirm slightly if touched.

Notes[]

Real-Life Information[]

  • This sea slug is in the same genus as Hypselodoris festiva, the festive sea slug. No other members of the genus Hypselodoris appear in the Endless Ocean series, but more distant relatives (from the genus Chromodoris) do, including the striped white sea slug, spotted white sea slug, and strigate chromodoris.
  • The second game mentions inter-species mating possibly creating color morphs of this species. Modern researchers generally do not think this is the case; close relative Hypselodoris bullocki (which does not appear in-game) has been recorded mating with the Cinderella sea slug, but it has been well-documented as an entirely different species rather than simply a different color.[1]
    • Some researchers consider the Cinderella sea slug to belong to a different genus altogether, and that its scientific name should be Risbecia apolegma; this is the name under which it was originally described, but now it is considered a member of Hypselodoris.[2][3]
  • The notes about color from the Marine Encyclopedias are correct; the Cinderella sea slug is mostly pink- or red-purple, with a white lace-like pattern at its edges. It is known as an aesthetically attractive species, but professional aquarists and experts advise that it should not be kept in captivity, due to its specialized diet of specific sea sponges.[4]
  • The Cinderella sea slug is typically found in the Western Pacific, from the coast of Japan down to Australia.[5] Its location in Endless Ocean 2 is therefore inaccurate, as the Zahhab Region in which it is found is in the Red Sea, off the coast of Egypt.
