The blue discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) is a species of freshwater fish found in Endless Ocean 2.

It is named for its characteristic round shape and beautiful blue-green color. Its coloration and behavior make it a popular aquarium fish, though it is difficult to keep.

In-Game

Marine Encyclopedia

Endless Ocean 2

Description

"This species has an attractive metallic blue luster and is popular as an aquarium fish.

Fish in the discus genus come in a variety of colors and each has its own name. Not all of these colors have occurred naturally - many have been achieved by selective breeding."

[ Where's the Milk Coming From? ]

"These fish provide a viscous solution called 'discus milk' for rearing their young. The fish do not have teats, but instead secrete it through their skin.

Even more surprising is that this 'milk' is secreted by the male as well as the female."

Location

Endless Ocean 2

Blue discus can be found in the Twilight Temple at coordinates C-1SE, C-2NE, and D-2NW. This places them near the entrance to the Sacred Chamber.

Behaviour

The blue discus swims in large groups in the Twilight Temple's main room, generally staying near the Sacrificial Well in its center. Their trivia is unlocked by feeding them.

Real-Life Information

  • True to the blue discus's in-game description, discus fish are wildly popular aquarium fish, despite the extremely specificc water requirements needed for them to thrive; this has earned them a reputation as the "King of Aquarium Fish"[1][2]. Selective breeding of blue discus has produced a large variety of colors and patterns[3][4]. Some of these patterns have specific names, such as the blue diamond discus, royal blue discus, and cobalt blue discus[5][6][7].
    • There are two more discus species in the Symphysodon genus: the red discus (S. discus) and the green discus (S. tarzoo)[8][9]. Some sources, however, only recognize S. aequifasciatus and S. discus[10][11]. This is because S. tarzoo was only recently recognized as a separate species in the year 2006 (though it was first named in 1959)[12].
      • There is some controversy around the naming of S. tarzoo, and some sources consider the proper name to be S. haraldi instead[13]. This issue has yet to be fullly resolved[14].
    • Another contender for the position of "most popular freshwater aquarium fish" are angelfish, one species of which (the altum angelfish) appears in Endless Ocean 2[15].
  • Like the in-game description states, the parent discuses secrete a nutritious "milk" for their young to eat while they are still growing[16], whereas the usual behavior is for fish to simply abandon the fry after they hatch[17]. The feeding goes on for roughly three weeks before the baby fish seek out other food sources[18].
  • Discuses are usually shy fish, and take shelter in plants and amongst rocks[19]. They may, however, become more territorial during breeding season[2][20].
