The black arowana (Osteoglossum ferreirai) is a species of freshwater fish found only in Endless Ocean 2.

It is a highly sought-after aquarium fish, sometimes costing hundreds of dollars on the market. It carries its eggs in its mouth until they hatch, a behavior called mouthbrooding.

Endless Ocean 2

Description

"Adults of the species are an attractive blue-green color but the young are black, changing color as they mature. The fully mature fish is very similar in color to the silver arowana. Its color also depends on the environment in which it lives."

Location

Endless Ocean 2

Adult black arowanas swim along King Amaru's Aqueduct, behind Spirit Falls in the Cortica River Upstream area at coordinates B-3SW, A-2 SE, B-2 W, and B-1 S. Their young are found under various zoom-mode glows throughout the map.

Behavior

The black arowana swims slowly up and down the length of King Amaru's Aqueduct.

Notes

  • This is one of GG's favorite creatures. The juvenile version is also one of his favorite creatures, counting as a separate favorite creature. This means that focusing on both forms of the black arowana functions as if the player has shown GG two separate favorite creatures instead of just one, as is the case with most favorite creatures.

Real-Life Information

  • Like the in-game description and models show, black arowanas change color as they mature; the young display yellow-on-black markings and the adults are colored a blue- or purple-tinted grey[1]. Their fins are trimmed in bright orange or white, adding to their aesthetic appeal[2][3].
  • Black arowanas are popular aquarium fish, but they require very large tanks to be properly kept[4]. They are also very powerful jumpers; a tight-fitting lid is necessary to prevent tank escapes[2][5]. They are generally peaceful towards large tankmates[6][7].
    • The black arowana's cousin, the silver arowana, is slightly more common in captivity[4][8].
    • Though it is captured in the wild for the aquarium trade, it is not currently at risk of going extinct[9].
  • Other common names for the black arowana include dragonfish, blue arowana, and water monkey[4][5]. The lattermost of these is due to their behavior of jumping out of the water to target prey in low-hanging trees[10][11].
    • Arowanas should not be confused with fish from the family Stomiidae, which are also sometimes called dragonfish[12][13].
  • The unique mouth shape of the black arowana serves several purposes. One purpose is that such a shape makes it easier to target prey on the surface of the water[10]. Another is that it allows them better access to air, which they can breathe in order to make up for the low-oxygen environment of their slow-moving river habitat[14][15].
    • Black arowanas, like all arowanas, demonstrate a behavior called mouthbrooding, in which a parent fish protects its eggs in its mouth until they hatch[15][16]. Mouthbrooding is not unique to arowanas; fish such as the blue-spotted jawfish also display it[17].
